Short Game Masterclass Recap: How Perth Golfers Save Shots Around the Green

Published by: Perth Golf Centre

Golf Clinics

Most golfers spend their practice time smashing drivers. Yet the fastest way to lower your scores is inside 100 metres, and that’s where short game lessons in Perth make the biggest difference. It’s exactly why we ran our Half Day Short Game Masterclass at Perth Golf Centre.

On Sunday 14 June, three of our PGA Professionals — Michael Kunman, John Boulton and Calum Juniper — took a group of golfers through an intensive three-hour afternoon at The Western Australian Golf Club in Yokine. The forecast threatened rain, but we went ahead, and the group got stuck into every shot that happens around the green.

Missed it? Good news — the next Short Game Masterclass is Sunday 8 November 2026, 3pm–6pm ($229). Grab your spot here. Below is what we covered, three drills you can use this week, and how to get short game lessons in Perth with our coaches. Want help now? Book a lesson online or call (08) 6184 8819.

Why the short game is where Perth golfers drop shots fastest

Think about your last round. How many shots were inside 100 metres? For most club golfers it’s well over half — every chip, pitch, bunker shot and putt.

Full swing changes take time to bed in. Short game improvements show up on the scorecard almost straight away. A tidier chip that finishes two metres closer turns three shots into two, again and again, every round.

That’s why our coaches build short game into almost every program at Perth Golf Centre. If you’re stuck on the same handicap, this is usually where we start. See our golf lessons in Perth.

Inside the Short Game Masterclass

The masterclass ran from 2pm to 5pm on the practice facilities at Perth Golf Centre, The Western Australian Golf Club, 60 Hayes Avenue, Yokine. Every golfer got:

  • 3 hours of expert short game instruction from three PGA Professionals
  • Challenge-based learning drills — games with a score, not just hitting balls
  • A welcome gift pack
  • Take-home notes and videos to keep practising after the day
  • Water and snacks to keep the energy up

With three coaches on the ground, every golfer got far more individual feedback than a typical group clinic, plus plenty of reps under pressure.

The challenge-based format is the key. Practising under a bit of pressure is what makes a skill hold up on the course, not just on the practice green. Putting work can then be fine-tuned in our Capto Putting Lab.

Meet your short game coaches

It’s rare to get three PGA Professionals in one session. All three coach week in, week out at Perth Golf Centre, so you can keep working with them after any event. Meet the full PGC coaching team.

  • Michael Kunman — PGA Professional and owner of Perth Golf Centre. Specialises in all aspects of the game, including putting and putter fitting. Coaches at our Quinns Rocks studio and weekly in Yokine, using Trackman data to pinpoint what’s costing you shots.
  • John Boulton — PGA Professional and former Club Champion at The Western Australian Golf Club (2017). During his PGA traineeship at Mount Lawley he won the WA State Championship and graduated as the number one player on the national stroke averages. John now coaches at Perth Golf Centre while competing on the Australasian Tour. His coaching focuses on distance and accuracy through stable club delivery, practical shot shaping and a sharp short game.
  • Calum Juniper — PGA Professional specialising in junior golf and player development. A former WA Men’s State Team representative (2018), Calum has competed on the PGA Tour of Australasia, PGT Asia, the All Thailand Tour and the Philippine Golf Tour. He helps golfers of all levels improve their scoring, lower their handicap and perform when it matters most.

The November masterclass is co-hosted by Michael, Calum and PGA Professional Danny Malcolm. Want one-on-one time instead? Book a lesson with any of our coaches, or call (08) 6184 8819 and we’ll match you with the right pro.

3 short game drills to try this week

You don’t need a masterclass to start. Take these to your next practice session and keep score.

  1. The Up-and-Down Challenge (chipping). Drop 9 balls in different lies around one green. Chip and putt out each one. Count how many you get up and down in two. Write the score down and try to beat it next time.
  2. The Landing Spot Ladder (pitching). Place a towel 5, 10 and 15 metres onto the green. Land three balls on each towel in a row before moving up. Miss one and start that rung again. This builds the distance control that turns chips into tap-ins.
  3. The Circle of Confidence (putting). Place 6 balls in a circle 1 metre from the hole. Hole all six in a row, then move to 1.5 metres. Short putts are the shots that rattle scores most — this drill makes them automatic.

Want somewhere to practise them? Book a Trackman Practice Session at Yokine. Got a shot that keeps letting you down? A coach can spot in minutes what you might chase for months — book a lesson or email admin@perthgolfcentre.com.au.
